Charles William Longwell, Jr., M.D., 76, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 10:30 pm January 12, 2025 at his residence. He was born April 3, 1948 in Belleville, Illinois to the late Charles William Longwell, Sr., M.D. and Viola (Cook) Longwell. Charles married Cynthia Ann (Palm) Longwell on June 29, 1975 in Naperville, Illinois. They were blessed with nearly 47 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on February 12, 2022.

Charles is survived by his son, Charles W. Longwell III, M.D. and wife, Diane; grandchildren, Phoebe and Rory Longwell; sisters, Sue (Wilkey) Lause, Donna (Wilkey) Spenner, Gail (Wilkey) Brady, and Melanie (Longwell) Schmeck; brother, David Longwell; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Charles was preceded in death by his daughter, Rachel Longwell; and siblings, Herbert Wilkey, David Homer Wilkey, Nancy Longwell, Dennis Longwell, and Darla Hake.

Dr. Longwell graduated from the University of Illinois and University Medical School. He was a resident surgeon in Jefferson County for many years. Charles a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Vernon. He enjoyed boating and camping in his spare time.

A Graveside Service will be held in April of 2025, the exact date is to be determined at this time. Inurnment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Nashville, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Charles’ honor to Angels on Assignment, U of I Foundation, or the ASPCA.
