Cindia “Cindy” Atkins, 64, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 11:54 am December 27, 2024 at her home. She was born August 5, 1960 in Saint Louis, Missouri to James Nieder and the late Marilyn (Mullins) Nieder Vaughn. Cindy married Thomas Atkins on August 12, 1978 in Mount Vernon and they were blessed with 46 beautiful years together.
In addition to her father, Cindy is survived by her son, Matthew Atkins of Champaign, Illinois; daughter, Michelle Shrum and husband, Joel of Kingston Springs, Tennessee; grandchildren, Hazel Atkins, June Atkins, Thomas Shrum, and Lewis Shrum; parents-in-law, Aaron Thomas Atkins and Rosemary Atkins of Mount Vernon; brother, Chris Vaughn and wife, Rosana of Chandler, Texas; sisters, Gina Vaughn-LeGrand and husband, Darryl of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Cathy AlSamaraiy and husband, Aiman of Saint Louis, Missouri, and Lisa Lampe of Pilot Knob, Missouri.
In addition to her mother, Cindy was preceded in death by her siblings, Don Toft and Megan Nieder.
She was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother and beloved aunt. She was a member of the Central Christian Church in Mount Vernon. Cindy also enjoyed serving in the soup kitchen. She retired as an Administration Assistant at Continental Tire in Mount Vernon after 35 years.
A Visitation will be held Friday, January 3, 2025 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 pm with Reverend Randy Hayes officiating. Interment will follow at Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Cindy’s honor to Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Knob Prairie Cemetery.
