WASHINGTON COUNTY — Washington County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 38-year-old Kentucky man after a traffic stop on Interstate 64 led to the discovery of more than 100 pounds of cannabis.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday, a sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle being driven by James W. Lavely, of Vanceburg, Kentucky. Deputy Howard and his K9 partner Luna ultimately conducted a vehicle sniff and the dog alerted to the presence of drugs.

A search reportedly revealed approximately 114 pounds of cannabis and Lavely was taken into custody.

He was booked into the Washington County Jail on charges of Class X felony trafficking of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis, and Class 1 felony possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis.

Lavely will remain in the county jail pending a detention hearing scheduled for Monday, January 29.
