MOUNT VERNON — Patrick Joseph Cashman, fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, entered eternal rest at 4:48 am on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at the VA Medical Center in Marion, Illinois, with his wife by his side, at the age of 74 years, 10 months, and 4 days. Mr. Cashman was born in Staten Island, New York, on Monday, January 17, 1949, the oldest child of Joseph P. and June (nee Daegling) Cashman. On August 23, 2015 in Mount Vernon, he married Laura J. Warren, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his father-in-law, Brad Warren and Sue of Mount Vernon; one brother, Don and wife, Judy; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Hank and Val Warren; nieces and nephews, Angie, Pam, Don, Eli, Mariah, Shelby, and Cassidy; two cousins; and his beloved cats, Midnight and Snowball.
Mr. Cashman moved to Missouri as a young boy and was raised in south Saint Louis County. He attended Mehlville Senior High School and attended Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, where he served as an usher as a teenager. He was proud to serve in the US Marine Corps, during the Vietnam era. Following his return, he worked in the hotel and hospitality industry for many years, working his way up to executive housekeeper. One of his proudest accomplishments was being named the first Employee of the Year at Rodeway Inn in Saint Louis. He enjoyed bowling, and was involved in bowling leagues as well as a slow-pitch softball team in his younger years. He also worked as a warehouse shipping clerk for several years. In 2013, he moved to Mount Vernon to join his future wife. He was an avid Cardinals fan, and enjoyed spending time with his wife, friends, and cats, playing computer games, grilling out, and working in his yard. He attended Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Vernon when able to do so.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Cashman; special aunt and uncle, Tom and Jane Daegling, who raised him; and his beloved cats, Speedy, Baby, Brownie, Freddie, and Peanut.
Friends may call from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Services will be held Monday, November 27, 2023 at 1:00 pm at the funeral home with Father Steven Paultner officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon. Military graveside rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post #141.
For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Jefferson County Veteran’s Committee or Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and will be accepted at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the ICU staff and palliative care staff of the Marion VA for their compassionate care of Patrick during his illness. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
