MARION COUNTY — The Marion County jury has been selected in the murder trial of a 32-year-old Centralia man accused of the 2015 shooting death of 24-year-old Dustin Rhynes.
Charging information claims Ricky Norwood shot and killed Rhynes who was found dead in a Centralia neighborhood alleyway in August 2015.
At the time of the shooting, Rhynes was reportedly with Charles Collins who was also shot but managed to run from the scene and seek help at Fireside Nursing Home.
Police didn’t make an arrest in the case until last year when a warrant was issued for Norwood. He had been sentenced in July 2020 to 151 months in federal prison on unrelated meth distribution and weapons charges and was serving his sentence in New Jersey at the time he was served with the warrant in the Rhynes’ murder case.
Norwood remains in custody on the first-degree murder charge and has not waived his right to a speedy trial.
According to the state, Norwood’s sister came over to a card game and cookout the day before Rhynes’ body was found. She was reportedly upset and complaining to her brother about Rhynes. Prosecutors say Norwood later left the cookout but returned 15 to 20 minutes after people at the cookout reported hearing a gunshot.
The prosecution continued to present its case Wednesday, with both sides earlier estimating the trial would take four days to present to the jury.
