David Hanks, 92, passed away on September 25th, 2023 peacefully with his family by his side.

He was born on May 27th, 1931 to Merle and Mary (Hanna) Hanks. He married Josephine (Back) Hanks. They later divorced and David married Alice Wilkerson Hanks on September 19, 1970 and she preceded him in death on July 24th, 2016.

David is survived by his two sons David M. Hanks and Olivia of Sandoval, and John McConnell and Anita of Metropolis, IL; four daughters Alta Monical and Gary of Alma, Kathy Owens and Dewayne of Odin, Mary Hanks of Sandoval, and Barbara Davis of Centralia; one brother Mark Hanks; three sisters Carlan Thomas, Joann Logue, and Marilyn Blankenship; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Alice, his ex-wife Josephine, brother Scott Hanks, sister Roberta Carpenter, grandchild Michael White, and great grandchild Luke Hanks.

David started his work career early, at the age of 9 by working on a farm. He worked at Teamsters 520 for over 30 years as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. He was the past Mayor of Sandoval and long-time Village Trustee. He was a member of the Lions Club, a past president and secretary for numerous times for over 40 years he participated. David was also a member of the Volkswagen Club, and was known as the Volkswagen Man of Sandoval. He was awarded the Platinum Bug Award by the American Motorworks in Effingham. David was a member of the Odin First Christian Church.
Per David’s wishes, private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Luke’s Gift, Kaskaskia Scholarship Foundation, and will be accepted at Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home at 235 North Sycamore Street, Centralia, IL 62801 (618) 532-3523, who is honored to be of service to the Hanks family.
