JEFFERSON COUNTY — A Jefferson County jury was handed the attempted murder case of Frederick Goss for deliberation Thursday afternoon.

The 57-year-old Goss is accused of disarming a Jefferson County correctional officer returning him to the Jefferson County Courthouse and then shooting at the officer with his own weapon.

Twelve jurors and two alternates were selected in the case Tuesday, with opening arguments being delivered Wednesday morning.

Attorneys in the case presented their arguments Wednesday, with the defendant making the unusual decision to take the stand.

The case made national news when surveillance video from the courthouse Sally Port was released to the public and showed the incident alleged in the charges against Goss.

He was being returned from lunch recess during an earlier trial against him stemming from an armed robbery and then an exchange of gunfire with a Mt. Vernon patrol officer. Goss was ultimately convicted in that case and is currently serving a 40-year prison sentence.
