John E. Delaney, Jr., 77, of Glen Carbon, Illinois, went to be with the Lord at 7:45 pm April 29, 2023 at his residence. He was born August 12, 1945 in Saint Louis, Missouri to the late John E. and Mary Ellen (Adams) Delaney, Sr. John married Penny (Gaunt) Delaney on February 7, 1997.
In addition to his beloved wife of twenty-six years, John is survived by his children, Jeff Delaney and wife, Pam of Wylie, Texas, Lance Delaney and wife, Sandy of Buffalo, South Carolina, Kelly Whitten and husband, Matt of Collinsville, Illinois, Kari Massey of Glen Carbon, Illinois; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his grandson, Chase Delaney and siblings, Sarah Delaney, Michael Delaney, and Patsy Hamilton.
Mr. Delaney proudly served his country in the United States Army in the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam Era. John helped build the Sears Tower and Interstate 57 and retired from the City of Mount Vernon in the water department. He was a lifetime member of Mount Vernon VFW Post #1376. John was a firm believer in his Lord Jesus Christ.
A Graveside Service will be held Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Full Military Rites will be held by American Legion Post #141. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made in John’s honor to Heights Community Family Advocacy Ministry.
