MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon police have released additional information regarding an early Monday morning arrest.

According to Police Chief Trent Page, 35-year-old Mt. Vernon woman Kaysie Belmont was arrested after an officer noticed her vehicle stopped around 1:25 a.m. with its emergency flashers on at Sixth and Veterans.

Thinking the motorist might need assistance, the officer stopped and reportedly found Belmont passed out behind the wheel of the car with a couple of children inside the vehicle.

The officer reportedly noticed the smell of burned cannabis in the car and other drug items inside. After removing Belmont from the vehicle, packages of Sudafed and methamphetamine were also reportedly discovered and Belmont was taken into custody.

Before she could be transported to the Jefferson County Jail, Belmont claimed she was in medical distress and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Following her release from the hospital, she was taken to jail on charges of delivery of meth, possession of meth manufacturing material, and meth-related child endangerment.

She was charged Tuesday in Jefferson County Court with Class 3 felony possession of less than 5 grams of meth and misdemeanor causing a child to be endangered.

Belmont captured local headlines in 2014 when she and her husband Michael Belmont were arrested and charged in connection with the savage beating of a 3-year-old boy left in their care.

Kaysie Belmont pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of reckless conduct and received 30 months probation in exchange for the other charges being dismissed if she agreed to testify against her husband at trial.

A jury found him guilty of beating the little boy and he is now serving a 30 years prison sentence in that case.
