Steve Raney, 73, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away after a battle with cancer at 3:30 pm January 5, 2023 at his home.

He was born August 18, 1949 in Mount Vernon to the late Arthur “Babe” and Loretta (Hefley) Raney.

Steve is survived by his wife, Paula (Ewald) Raney of Mount Vernon; children, Jennifer Echols and husband, Robbie, Mike Raney and wife, Delilah, all of Mount Vernon; stepchildren, Dawn Coomes-Abbott and wife, Melissa of Stevensville, Michigan and Greg Coomes; grandchildren, Jady Echols, Rylee Echols, Lexi Raney, and Gage Raney; step-grandchildren, Jasmine Coomes and Jacquline Coomes; brothers, Tim Raney and wife, Mary of Mount Vernon and Rob Raney and wife Becky of Jackson, Missouri; sisters, Janet (Raney) Maier of Palm Desert, California and Nancy (Raney) Deaton of Mount Vernon;  and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his brothers, James Michael “Jimbo” Raney, Ricky Lee “Rick” Raney, and David Raney; and brother-in-law, Tom Deaton.

Steve worked at Flota’s Distributing before retiring. He served in the US Army. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. Steve also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

A Graveside Service will be held Monday, January 9, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mount Vernon with Reverend Randy Hayes officiating. Interment will follow. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #141. Memorials may be made in Steve’s honor to the American Cancer Society.
