SALEM, IL — A series of events has area law enforcement on the lookout for those responsible for thefts of multiple vehicles and a hit-and-run crash.
The incidents began when a City of Salem truck was involved in a hit-and-run at Blair and South College in Salem. A quick investigation showed the truck had been stolen from the Salem City Yard and the suspect had fled the area. The 66-year-old driver of the vehicle that was hit suffered minor injuries and said he would take himself to the hospital. The stolen city truck was later located off of Steel Lane in rural Woodlawn. Jefferson County authorities said another vehicle had been stolen in the area the City of Salem truck had been discovered.
Still later, Washington County authorities found the vehicle taken in Woodlawn and that another vehicle was taken from the area in which it was discovered. The third vehicle was then pinged to a location in Junction City where a Marion County Sheriff’s deputy was able to find it but reported no one was around. Salem Public Works reports the City truck had just been returned to the far east end of the city’s maintenance building and the keys had been left inside. It’s believed the suspect had to walk past several employees to get to the truck.
Police are seeking a suspect in the string of events.
