(CARBONDALE, IL) — Southern Illinois saw several aviation-related incidents over the weekend. One person was killed and another is listed in critical condition after a single-engine plane crashed at a Southern Illinois airport. Two people were reported to be on board when the crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. Friday at Williamson County Regional Airport. Airport Director Doug Kimmel says the plane was attempting to land when it crashed about 500 feet north of the airport’s north-south runway. Williamson County Chief Deputy Coroner Scott Kinley identified the man who died as 56-year-old John Alleman of Carbondale. Injured was 64-year-old Todd Greiner, who’s listed in critical condition at a St. Louis area hospital. National Transportation Safety Board Investigator Aaron Sauer says the plane had reportedly been on an instructional flight. It was performing touch-and-go maneuvers when it crashed. That crash was the first of three aviation mishaps in the area over the weekend, as a small plane also went down in St. Clair County near Illinois Route 3 and Interstate 70. Illinois State Police closed down Route 3 near the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge at the request of the FAA.  No injuries were reported in that incident, according to the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency. Then on Saturday, a small plane was forced to make an emergency landing near Jonesboro. That plane was headed to Carbondale after taking part in the Big Muddy Air Race when it lost power and was forced to land. No injuries were reported.
