(CENTRALIA, IL) — A fire Sunday destroyed a home in the 3800 block of State Route 161 in Centralia, with multiple agencies on the scene for approximately four hours. Kell firefighters responded around 4:30 p.m. Sunday to the report of a house fire just west of Biggies Café and General Store. According to Kell Fire Chief Lonnie McDaneld, the fire originated in the basement of the home, with the floors above the basement falling in when firefighters arrived on the scene. McDaneld says because of the extent of the fire, firefighters used a defensive attack from the outside of the home and were never able to go inside the home or the basement. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and an investigator with the State Fire Marshal’s Office will be on scene Monday. Centralia and Salem Fire Protection Districts provided mutual aid at the scene, and Orchardville firefighters provided mutual aid at the Kell fire station. Mutual aid firefighters returned to their stations around 8:15, and the remaining Kell firefighters left the scene around 8:30 Sunday night. No injuries were reported.
