ALMA, IL — A resident of rural Alma escaped with only minor injuries Tuesday morning from a fire that destroyed his home.

According to the Kinmundy-Alma Fire Department, the home at 3296 Hicks Road was already burned to the ground when firefighters arrived. Carl Sisson was reportedly home after taking his wife to work when the fire apparently broke out in the kitchen area. Sisson woke up around 8:30 a.m. and found the fire was overtaking the home. He was able to escape the blaze with only a few blisters but was unable to grab his keys, phone or get dressed. He reportedly had to walk a half-mile to a neighbor’s home before calling for help. Sisson declined medical treatment.

The home was reportedly uninsured and nothing inside was salvageable. The Red Cross has been contacted to assist.
