CLAY COUNTY, IL — The trial against a 40-year-old Flora man has been vacated after a motion was filed earlier this week seeking an evaluation into the defendant’s fitness to stand trial. Shane Highsmith remains in the Clay County Jail with bail set at $500,000 after he was charged last month with with attempted murder in connection with the stabbings of multiple people at a Flora hotel.
According to the Clay County State’s Attorney’s Office, Shane Highsmith is facing Class X felony attempted murder and three Class 3 felonies for two counts aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and being a felon in possession of a weapon. Highsmith is accused of stabbing the alleged victims inside one of the hotel rooms and out in the parking lot.
The motion for a fitness evaluation was filed Monday and the court ordered the evaluation Wednesday. The case was subsequently delayed and the jury trial date was vacated.
A status hearing on the fitness evaluation is now scheduled for March 10.
