MT. VERNON ,IL — A man wanted on two warrants in Colorado was arrested by Mt. Vernon Police Thursday on Possession of Drug and Firearm charges.

MVPD officers responded to Potomac Boulevard on a call to check on the well being of a person in a vehicle around 7:15am. Upon the officer’s arrival they made contact with 29-year-old Nicholas W. Duarte from Loveland, Colorado. While speaking with Duarte, a drug pipe was observed in the vehicle. Medical personnel from the Mt Vernon Fire Department and Litton’s Ambulance were dispatched to evaluate Duarte.

Officers learned he was wanted on two warrants from Fort Collins, Colorado. The first warrant was for Failure to Appear on a Dangerous Drugs charge while the second was for Failure to Appear on a case charging him with being a Criminal in Possession of a Financial Device, Violation of Bail Bond and Three Counts of Habitual Criminal in Possession of a Controlled Substance. There was no bond on the Colorado warrants.

As officers took Duarte into custody, a substance reported to be fentanyl was found on his person. During a search of the vehicle, officers located additional drug equipment, currency, cannabis, and a loaded handgun in his vehicle.

Duarte is incarcerated in the Jefferson County Justice Center on local charges for Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Firearm Ammunition by a Felon.

Once his local charges are completed he will be extradited back to Colorado to answer for those charges.
