CARBONDALE, IL — Carbondale Police have released the name of the suspect involved in a shooting and standoff with police on East Ashley Street in Carbondale Monday.

Police say 27-year-old William J. Stewart of Carbondale was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and aggravated discharge of a firearm. Stewart is lodged in the Jackson County Jail as police continue to investigate.

After getting a report of shots fired in the 400 block of East Ashley around 3:15 p.m. Monday, police went to the scene where they found that a dispute amongst acquaintances in the parking lot had led to gunfire. Officers secured the home and immediately began negotiating with Stewart in an attempt to secure his surrender. A search warrant for the home and an arrest warrant for Stewart were secured while negotiations continued.

The Carbondale Police Department Special Response Team served the warrants at the home at 8:30 p.m. and took Stewart into custody. There were no reported injuries regarding the original incident nor in the arrest of Stewart.
