Luther Newton “Sonny” Beppler, 86, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 10:10 pm March 6, 2020 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital. He was born March 14, 1933 in Mount Vernon to the late Philbert and Renalda (Rice) Beppler. Luther first married Helen (Powell) Beppler and she preceded him in death. He later married Joyce (Graham) Beppler on February 14, 1966. They were blessed with 54 years of marriage.

In addition to his beloved wife, Sonny is survived by his children, Stella Vest of Flora, Illinois, Carl Beppler of Georgia, Mike Beppler and wife, Lori of Fairfield, Illinois, Jimmy Beppler and wife, Janet of Olney, Illinois, Julie Campbell and husband, Brad of Iowa, Tonyia Morgan and significant other, Russell Marlowe of Mount Vernon, Illinois, and Darrell Beppler of Mount Vernon, Illinois; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and siblings, Frank Beppler and wife, Carol of Sesser, Illinois, and Jack Beppler and wife, Janet, Glenda Tate, Patsy Harriman, and Peggy Rivera, all of Mount Vernon, Illinois.

In addition to his parents and first wife, Sonny was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy Beppler; and siblings, Bob Rice, Dorothy Thompson, Carolyn Borowiak, and Philbert Beppler, Jr.

Sonny proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for thirteen years. He worked in law enforcement, construction, and later as a bus driver for Beck and Dial Transport. He was a member of the American Legion Post #141 and VFW. Sonny enjoyed playing solitaire in his spare time. He also loved corresponding on CB radios, as well as repairing and selling them. Sonny left his mark on this world and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Per his request, a Graveside Service will be held Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at 1:00 pm at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois with Pastor Dan Harriman officiating. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made in Sonny’s honor to the American Legion Post #141 or to Hughey Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses.
