FRANKLIN COUNTY — Two people were killed and another person sustained serious injuries in a single-vehicle crash late Wednesday night in Franklin County.
According to Illinois State Police, a SUV driven by a 47-year-old man from Longmont, Colorado was driving north on I-57 at milepost 65 when he left the roadway to the west, entered the median and rolled several times. The SUV came to rest inside the southbound shoulder. The driver and his passenger – a 64-year-old woman – were ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. Another passenger – a 22-year-old male – was flown to an out of state hospital with serious injuries. ISP did not have any information regarding where the woman and passenger were from and didn’t know if anyone in the vehicle was wearing seat belts. ISP says names are being withheld until family members are notified.
ISP District 13 in Du Quoin and the ISP Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit are investigating the crash. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, West Frankfort Police Department, West Frankfort Fire Department, Franklin County Coroner’s Office, and IDOT assisted at the scene.
