CARMI, IL — White County State’s Attorney Denton Aud has filed additional charges against a Crossville man who allegedly started a house fire and pushed his mother into it last Thursday evening.

Aud says 35-year-old Clayton Andrew Swanner faces one count of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated arson, one count of residential arson, one count of aggravated domestic battery, one count of aggravated battery and one count of domestic battery. He is lodged in the White County Jail on $1 million bond. When Swanner was arrested, he was charged with aggravated domestic battery and taken to jail. No bond was set.

According to court records, Swanner was set to appear Tuesday for his first appearance and be advised on these additional charges.

According to the White County Sheriff’s Office, White County 911 got a call from a man saying that Cathy Brandenstein had come to his home for help after Swanner had allegedly set the house fire on Superior Lane and pushed Brandenstein into the fire. She suffered severe burns on a major portion of her body.

Deputies later found Swanner walking down the road in front of the house a short time later. He was held at that point and taken to the sheriff’s office. Swanner was checked out by medical personnel and charged in the incident.
