MCLEANSBORO — The City of McLeansboro will be smoke testing its sanitary sewer system Monday.

This smoke test will help inspection crews find breaks and defects in the sewer system. The smoke you will see coming from the vent stacks on houses or holes in the ground is non-toxic, non-staining, has no odor, is white to gray in color and creates no fire hazard. It should not enter your home unless you have defective plumbing or dried up drain traps.

You should also pour a gallon of water into each floor drain prior to testing. If smoke enters your home, there is good reason to assume that dangerous sewer gases may also be entering your home or business. You should evacuate immediately and notify work crews. If you are not at home and discover smoke when you return, call 927-3712.

If anyone in your home or business has respiratory problems and is immobile, call 643-2723 prior to testing.
