MT. VERNON — For some, planes are a mode of transportation. For others, it’s a lifelong hobby that you love to do.

Bruce and Steve Hammer are originally from Iowa, and are in Mt. Vernon this weekend for the EAA AirVenture Cup Race taking off from Outland Airport Sunday. They are originally from Iowa, and Steve Hammer says planes provided an escape from hard farm labor growing up.

That was almost 50 years ago that Steve started flying planes. And it has always been a family affair for the Hammers. Bruce Hammer says planes have provided him with a sense of accomplishment and freedom throughout his life.

Both Hammers’ planes, along with almost 90 others are on display Saturday at the Outland Airport at an Open House from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public is invited to join the fun. The race will officially begin on Sunday around 9 a.m.
