JEFFERSON COUNTY — Jefferson Fire Protection District responded early Monday morning to a residential structure fire in the 12-thousand block of East Swift Road, and subsequently issued a call for mutual aid to multiple area departments.

Firefighters from Centralia, Kell, Salem, Woodlawn, and Waltonville fire districts were called to assist with the fully involved structure. The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office was also called to respond to the scene.

The call was made before 5:30 Monday morning by a passerby who noticed the fire. Many also reported seeing a large cloud of black smoke across the sky.
