Helen Sue Johnson, 94, a resident of Carmi, Illinois and formerly of McLeansboro, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at Carmi Manor Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

She was born September 24, 1924 in McLeansboro, IL, the daughter of Dr. Charles and Vada (Davis) Johnson.  Helen Sue graduated from McLeansboro Central High School, and then received her Undergraduate Degree in Education in 1957 from Southeast Missouri Cape State College in Cape Girardeau, MO.  In 1960 she received her Masters Degree in English from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, IL. Helen Sue previously enlisted in the Navy with her sister Vada Fay Johnson Carson, and together served in the Waves while working in intelligence at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. during World War II.  Both received Honorable Discharges from the Navy upon conclusion of the war.

Helen Sue is survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers: Solly Wilson Johnson, John Wilford Johnson, Charles Glen Johnson, Val B. Johnson and Herbert Hoover Johnson; and three sisters: Christine Johnson Felty, Vada Fay Johnson Carson and one infant sister who died at birth.
Graveside memorial services with Graveside Military Honors will be held Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro.  Those attending the service are asked to meet at the cemetery.
