ILLINOIS (RFD) — A proposal is out there to increase motor fuel taxes. Democrat Senator Martin Sandoval says the hike would be 25 cents a gallon to 44 cents. It’s currently at 19 cents a gallon.

The expanded gas tax and a number of other increases tied to vehicle registration and other fees could bring in $2.4 billion a year. Those dollars would be spent on transportation.

The increase certainly seems big – but Republican Rep. Don Dewitte says think what a few bucks bought back in 1990, the last time the motor fuel tax was increased.

Vehicle registration fees would increase to $50 more a year.
