CHARLESTON, IL — Three Mt. Vernon residents – including a primary juvenile male suspect — have been arrested in Coles County in connection with a weekend burglary and shooting in Charleston that sent a victim to the hospital due to a bullet wound to the abdomen.

According to Charleston police, 18-year-old Shannon M. Barnes, and 19-year-old Alyssa A. Jenkins, were arrested Monday for allegedly assisting a primary juvenile subject in the investigation.

That juvenile suspect was arrested Tuesday in Mattoon. He had been sought since the Sunday incident and had been considered likely armed and dangerous.

Charleston officers reportedly arrived early Sunday at the residence of 20-year-old Trevor Pinkstaff, of Charleston. Pinkstaff was suffering a gunshot wound and was airlifted to Carle Hospital where he has undergone multiple surgeries.

Investigators believe Pinkstaff arrived home to find his residence being burglarized by an acquaintance and was shot soon after a struggle.

Mt. Vernon, Mattoon, and Eastern Illinois University police departments, along with the Coles County Sheriff and State’s Attorney’s Office all assisted the Charleston Police Department with the investigation.

Barnes is currently on probation in Jefferson County for resisting a peace officer. He was last in court Friday for a review in that case.
