A DeSoto man is facing gun charges in Carbondale.
According to Carbondale Police, officers were in the 500 block of South Illinois Avenue Sunday morning, monitoring crowds at bar-closing time, when just before 2:20 a.m. officers saw a disturbance begin among a group of people in the alleyway behind the businesses.
As officers approached the disturbance they heard several gunshots. As the officers ran to the area of the gunshots, they saw a man firing a handgun in the direction of a vehicle that was fleeing the alleyway.
Officers ordered the man, identified as 22-year-old Brett Jones, to drop his weapon. He immediately complied. Jones was arrested without further incident.
Officers heard an additional gunshot come from an occupant of the vehicle as it fled the area. That vehicle was subsequently located unoccupied on East Oak Street and it was impounded. There were no reported injuries as a result of this incident.
Jones was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of weapons and incarcerated at the Jackson County Jail.
Two other vehicles were involved in a traffic crash as a result of the original vehicle’s actions. There were no injuries as a result of the traffic crash.
