The Marion City Council swore in Doug Patton as its newest commissioner at Monday night’s meeting.

Patton was appointed to the seat vacated Friday by Monty Blue. Blue was sworn in last week to replace Anthony Rinella, who became mayor following the retirement of longtime Mayor Bob Butler.

Blue resigned from the seat after it was discovered that his home was not in the city limits when his son applied for a building permit on land next to Blue’s property.

The city council accepted Blue’s resignation at last night’s meeting and made the recommendation to appoint Patton to serve on the council. Patton was one of six people expressing interest in the seat before Blue was chosen as commissioner by the council last week.

Patton is no stranger to the city council. He served as a commissioner from 2011 to 2015 according to the Southern Illinoisan. He works in land acquisition for the Illinois Department of Transportation.
