(CENTRALIA, IL) — Two 20-year-old Centralia men remain in the Marion County Jail awaiting the formal filing of charges in connection with the alleged armed robbery of two Salem men Tuesday night in Centralia. According to police, Harrion Hawkins and Austin N. Jones are accused of robbing 21-year-old Jacob Hayes and 22-year-old Chris Hill, both of Salem. Reports indicate Centralia officers were responding to the area of North Hickory and Broadway late Tuesday night after a resident reported seeing two men in ski masks and became suspicious. Officers were investigating after a suspect vehicle had been located but they were unaware that a crime had actually been committed until Hayes and Hill approached them as the vehicle was being released and told them they’d been robbed. According to reports, the two alleged victims had stopped in their vehicle to talk to Jones and Hawkins and Hawkins got into their car. While asking for cigarettes Hawkins apparently noticed Hayes’ money, pointed a gun at Hayes and gave him five seconds to give him all the money. When Hayes refused the two began to struggle over the weapon. Hawkins reportedly was able to steal $350 plus the keys to the alleged victims’ vehicle before firing a shot into the back seat of the car as he fled. Officers again located the suspect vehicle and after questioning its occupants arrested Jones for alleged armed robbery and possession of a firearm. Hawkins was reportedly walking in the area and ran when he noticed the police. He was captured a few minutes later and was taken into custody for alleged armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm. No injuries were reported and despite a search with the help of the Marion County K-9 unit, neither weapon believed used in the incident has been located.
