(BENTON, IL) — The Benton City Council Monday night voted unanimously to accept a recent donation of an ambulance from West Frankfort. The ambulance will be used as a backup when Abbott Ambulance is out of town or not available. It will also be used at all structure fires and city workers will be able to use it free of charge when they are injured at work. It will also save the city thousands in worker’s compensations claims too. Benton Fire Chief Shane Cockrum shared his thoughts about having an ambulance available to the city.  Public Health and Safety Commissioner Don Storey stressed that the city is not trying to put Abbott or anyone else out of business by providing an ambulance service to residents. Storey says the city is going to try this as a two-year trial and if it doesn’t work and the city loses money, then it will be abolished. The city hopes to have the ambulance service running by June 1.
