(MT. VERNON, IL) — A change in seasons is the main reason a popular community event will not be held in Mt. Vernon in 2017. According to Mt. Vernon Airport Director Chris Collins, the Balloons Over Mt. Vernon event was initially moved from October to May after the committee addressed weather concerns regarding the event. The turnaround time to prepare for an event in May has led officials to cancel the event for 2017 with a focus on returning the event to the area in May 2018. Balloons have only taken flight once in the past four years due to high winds and that, coupled with colder autumn mornings sparked a change according to Collins. Another conflict that aided in cancelling the 2017 event was a scheduled Run for the Wall stop that brings 500 motorcyclists through the area in late May.
