
Dorothy M Shafer, 94, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 1:30 am March 13, 2025 at Axiom Healthcare in Mount Vernon, Illinois. She was born April 11, 1930 in Flora, Illinois to the late Robert L. and T. Lucille (Evans) Walker. Dorothy married Don H. Shafer on June 11, 1950 in Flora, Illinois. They were blessed with fifty-nine years of marriage before he preceded her in death on September 28, 2009.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, Dennis Shafer of Bluford, Illinois, Charles Shafer and wife, Teena of Centralia, Illinois, and Robert Shafer and wife, Tina of Mount Vernon, Illinois; daughter, Cynthia Bedar of Mount Vernon, Illinois; grandchildren, Britt Egans and husband, Jeff, Nicholas Shafer and wife, Randy, Michael Shafer and wife, Whitney, Dominic Shafer and wife, Bailey, Adam Shafer, Tino Shafer, and Dawn Bedar; great-grandchildren, Nevada, Shafer, Nicole Shafer, and Regin Shafer; great-great-grandchildren, Addison Bedar, Tucker Brown, Roman Shafer, Mila Shafer, and Lola Shafer; sister, Pauline Shepherd of Bellwood, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews
In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her infant brother.
Alongside her husband, Dorothy owned and operated Musgrave Shoe Store for many years. She then worked at Wal-Mart until retirement. Dorothy was a past officer and member of the DAR Joel Pace Chapter of Mount Vernon, Illinois and was active in many civic groups, clubs, and church groups. She was a member of the Mount Vernon Bowling Hall of Fame and was an avid golfer and bowler. Throughout her life, she had gotten two hole in ones. Dorothy also enjoyed watching and rooting for the Saint Louis Cardinals.
A Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 19, 2025 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 am with Mr. J. Howard Kraps officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Dorothy’s honor to Central Christian Church.
