
Shirley M. Brown, 92, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 1:22 pm March 4, 2025 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. She was born December 15, 1932 in Franklin County, Illinois to the late Ethna “Ek” and Myrtle (Whitlow) McBride. Shirley married Roy Brown on July 29, 1950.
In addition to her beloved husband of nearly seventy-five years, Shirley is survived by her sons, Keith Brown and Ross Brown and wife, Debbie, all of Mount Vernon; daughter, Rorie Palmer and husband Roger of Mount Vernon; daughter-in-law, Lisa Brown; grandchildren, Jared and Emily Palmer, Russell Brown and wife, Angela Freehill-Brown, Jim Lynch and wife, Cindy, Nick Lynch and wife, Amy; great-grandchildren, Merus, Ellis, and Margaux Brown, Cody, Blake, Olivia, and Brayden Lynch; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her son, Mony Alan Brown; daughter, Cristi Brown; daughter-in-law, Sharon Brown; two brothers; and one sister.
Shirley was a den mother for the local boy scouts and a PTA member. She enjoyed to paint and was quick witted and sharp tongued. Shirley loved the Gaither Vocal Band and all gospel music. Shirley loved her church and it’s members at Park Avenue Baptist Church. Above all, she loved to be with her family and friends to talk, laugh, and tell stories.
A Visitation will be held Friday, March 7, 2025 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin 1:00 pm with Reverend Gary Davenport officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Shirley’s honor to Park Avenue Baptist Church.
