Aaron “Tommy” Thomas Atkins, 96, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away on February 17, 2025 at his residence. He was born April 30, 1928 in Waltonville, Illinois to the late Thomas M. and Viva Fern (Isom) Atkins. Tommy married Rosemary (Newell) Atkins on March 7, 1958 in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

In addition to his beloved wife of nearly sixty-seven years, Tommy is survived by his children, Jeffrey Mark Atkins and wife, Crystal of Highland, Illinois, Thomas R. Atkins of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Denise Banes and husband, Jeff of Mount Vernon, Illinois; grandchildren, Ambur Qualk-Emrich and husband, Shane of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Dylan Shane Henry and wife, Taylor of Patuxent River, Maryland, Matthew Thomas Atkins of Champaign, Illinois, Michelle Brianne Shrum and husband, Joel of Kingston Springs, Tennessee, Aaron Marcus Atkins and significant other, Kawehi of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Adam Troy Atkins and wife, Brittany of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Tommy was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Cindia Atkins and siblings, Ila Newell, Marie Hall, June Hamlin, Bobby Atkins, Donald Atkins, and Lowell Atkins.

Mr. Atkins proudly served his country in the United States Army. Tommy worked for over thirty-four years at Locke Stove Company, formerly Vernois Stove Foundry. He loved playing guitar and played in two local bands. He enjoyed watching Saint Louis Cardinals Baseball.

A Visitation will be held Saturday, February 22, 2025 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 pm with Mr. Marty Mills officiating. Interment will follow at Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Tommy’s honor to Knob Prairie Cemetery.
