
James Wendell Harris, 96, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois passed away at 8:17 pm on January 28, 2025 at Stonebridge Memory Care in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was born September 8, 1928 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the late Cyril Harris and Mabel (Harlow) Harris. James married Virginia Fern (Anderson) Harris on November 10, 1950 at her parents’ home in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
In addition to his beloved wife of 74 years, James is survived by his son, Devan “Dumpy” Harris and wife, Reta of Mount Vernon, Illinois; daughter, Christine Harris of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; grandson Eric Harris and wife, Autumn of Mount Vernon, Illinois; great-grandchildren Samantha, Alexis, Isabel, Mackynze and Colton Harris of Mount Vernon, Illinois; and sister, Virgene Pearce of Mount Vernon, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents and numerous sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws.
James served in the United States Army as a mechanic in the Korean War. He attained the rank of Sargent. After returning home from the war he began his career at Illinois Power as a pipe fitter in the gas department, where he retired with almost 42 years of service. He was a proud union member, belonging to the IBEW 702.
James was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling and spending time helping his kids and family members. He never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He will be dearly missed.
A Visitation will be held Sunday, February 2, 2025 from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 1:30 pm with Mr. Jason Newell officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois. Full military rites will be held at the cemetery by American Legion Post #141. Memorials may be made in James’ honor to East Salem Cemetery.
