MT. VERNON, IL — The Mt.Vernon Police Department received information about threats being made to the Mt. Vernon Township High School and “middle school” over social media. An investigation was immediately initiated by our department. MVTHS, District 80 schools, and School Resource Officers with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were notified of the threats. The investigation revealed numerous other schools in the region have received the same threat but with a different schools name and is wide spread. While this threat is not credible, the Mt. Vernon Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and Illinois State Police will have additional officers at the schools in our area to ensure safety of staff and students and allow schools to be in session.
