
MOUNT VERNON — Sherry Nova Gibson, 93, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 12:30 am June 13, 2024 at Mount Vernon Countryside Manor. She was born July 26, 1930 in New Madrid, Missouri to the late William Theodore and Juanita I. (Boyd) Berbling. Sherry married Donald A. Gibson, Sr. on June 3, 1951 in Cairo, Illinois. He preceded her in death on August 22, 1994.
Sherry is survived by her children, William R. “Bill” (LeAnna) Gibson of Mount Vernon, Deena (Michael) Johnson of Memphis, Tennessee, and Stephen M. (Barb) Gibson of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Mike (Michelle) Gibson of Robinson, Illinois, Danny (Mandy) Gibson of Mount Vernon, Josh Cuppy of Memphis, Tennessee, Tana (Jordan) Lenier of Memphis, Jenny (Rodney) Roberson of Mount Vernon, Emily (Joe) Davis of Mount Vernon, and Clay (Chelsie) Gibson of Mount Vernon; fourteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and siblings, Marcena Barbling of Anna, Illinois, and Bernadine Roberts of Olive Branch, Illinois; and brother-in-law, Pete Halstead of Litton, Indiana.
In addition to her parents and husband, Sherry was preceded in death by her son, Donald A. Gibson, Jr.; great-grandson, Jeremy Gibson; siblings, Theodore Berbling, Jr., Nelson Berbling, and Charlene Halstead; and brother-in-law, Charles Roberts.
Sherry worked for Montgomery Wards, Bank of Illinois, Thrifty and Drury Motels, and as treasurer for Dodds and Bethel Grade Schools. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church. Sherry had a passion for singing at area churches and revivals. She was often sought after from Mount Vernon to Cairo for weddings and church services. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A Visitation will be held Friday, June 14, 2024 from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mount Vernon. A Graveside Service will begin at 1:00 pm with Pastor Alan Monroe officiating. Interment will follow.
