JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 57-year-old Ashley man representing himself in a Jefferson County case charging him with multiple child pornography and criminal sexual assault offenses is asking the state to investigate an alleged incident involving the brother of the alleged victim in his case.
Robert “Robbie” Paul appeared in court Tuesday as a defendant in a case charging him with two Class 1 felonies for criminal sexual assault of a family member under the age of 18 and nine counts Class 2 felony possession of child pornography depicting a victim under the age of 13.
Paul represented himself at the hearing and despite his objections; the court approved four state motions in the case.
He again asked the court for relief from its earlier decision to deny his pretrial release in the case and claims the brother of the alleged victim in the case “tried to kill him” while they were both inmates in the Jefferson County Jail.
The case was recessed until June 20 to allow the state time to investigate Paul’s allegations.
Jefferson County Chief Deputy Blaine Uhls says Paul alleged to the jail that the other inmate threatened him and Illinois State Police was brought in to investigate the claim but haven’t completed it yet.
Chief Uhls confirmed the two men never had physical contact inside the jail and noted Paul has been in protective custody during almost all — if not all — of his time in the Jefferson County Jail.
