SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has announced motorists will soon be able to access DMV services from a mobile van that will travel to their community, similar to an ice cream truck.

Giannoulias said since taking office, it’s been their mission to make it easier and more convenient for Illinois residents to access government services without having to wait or travel to a DMV facility.  He explained in a Wednesday press release that the DMV on Wheels program will build on the success of their digital programs, saving time by offering efficient ways to do things like renew your driver’s license or get a vehicle sticker without leaving their communities.

The Mobile DMV services can renew their driver’s license, state ID or Temporary Visitor Driver’s License (TVDL); Renew their vehicle registration; Purchase a vehicle sticker; Apply for a REAL ID; Apply for a replacement or corrected driver’s license or state ID; Join the Illinois Organ and Tissue Donor Registry; and Register to vote.

The traveling DMVs will also benefit communities should an established DMV location experience an emergency and have to temporarily close. The DMV on Wheels can take over that region in the interim and keep services flowing smoothly.

Giannoulias’ office says it will push the program via social media kits and partnerships with local organizations.
