DAHLGREN, Ill. — William Robert “Bill” Herzing, 81, of Dahlgren, IL, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion, IL.  He was born July 26, 1942 in Dahlgren, the son of Louis & Clara (Rubenacker) Herzing.

Bill served in the United States Army, and was a Vietnam War veteran.  He was a member of the former American Legion in Dahlgren, where he served as Post Commander.  He was proud to have served his country, and was honored to be a U.S. military veteran.  Bill had also worked as a mechanic for over 30 years. He was a member of the St. John of Nepomucene Catholic Church in Dahlgren.  He was a Chicago Cubs baseball fan, and he enjoyed fishing, attending horse races, dining out, and socializing.

Bill is survived by his sister Betty Tanner of Boerne, TX; brother-in-law Fredrick Winemiller of Dahlgren, IL; and sister-in-law Lucille Herzing of Mt. Vernon, IL.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents Louis & Clara Herzing; five brothers: James Herzing, Floyd Herzing, Richard Herzing, George Herzing and Roland Herzing; two sisters: Clara Lou Mitchell and Mary Winemiller; two brothers-in-law: James “Bud” Tanner and John Mitchell; two sisters-in-law: Sue Herzing and Virginia “Jeanie” Herzing; and niece Stephanie Fitzgerald .

Graveside Funeral Services for William Robert “Bill” Herzing will be held at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Cemetery in Dahlgren with Fr. Benny George officiating.  Interment will immediately follow the funeral service at the cemetery.  Graveside Military Funeral Honors will be provided by an Illinois Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team and the McLeansboro American Legion Post #106.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and will be accepted at the cemetery or at the funeral home.
