HILLSBORO, Ill. — A large sinkhole is being blamed for shutting down Illinois Route 185 between Hillsboro and Vandalia.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the 50-foot-wide sinkhole formed in a farmer’s field adjacent to the road. The sinkhole has slightly increased in diameter, making the area unsafe for travel.

It’s located southeast of the John A. Graham Correctional Center. Until further notice, IL 185 will remain closed while a geotechnical consultant evaluates the situation.
