MOUNT VERNON — A 16-year-old Mt. Vernon female was shot and killed Saturday afternoon and a 16-year-old male was arrested on charges accusing him of her shooting death.
According to the Mt. Vernon Police Department, around 4 p.m. Saturday, their Dispatch Center received a 9-1-1 call from someone screaming but not giving information about what was happening.
Officers were dispatched to the residence in the 1800 block of Lamar where they found a 16-year-old resident had been shot. They also found a 16-year-old male holding a handgun at the scene.
Officers were able to take the 16-year-old male into custody and secure the firearm. Medical personnel from the Mt Vernon Fire Department and Litton’s Ambulance Service were also dispatched to the scene.
The 16-year-old female victim was transported to a local hospital where she was ultimately pronounced dead.
The 16 year-old-male was transported to the Mt Vernon Police Department for processing.
He’s being detained on preliminary charges of Armed Violence / Discharge of a Firearm, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Involuntary Manslaughter, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Person Under 18.
Police do say the State’s Attorney’s Office may amend those charges may be amended as the investigation progresses.
The Mt Vernon Police Department reports they had previously arrested the 16-year-old male at the end of April 2023, after an MVPD dispatcher observed him with a handgun and notified officers.
The juvenile reportedly fled from officers but was ultimately apprehended following a foot pursuit.
Officers then reportedly found a loaded firearm and additional ammunition in his possession and he was taken to a juvenile detention facility on charges of Armed Violence, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Resisting Arrest.
At the time of his Saturday arrest, the 16-year-old male was on parole and the Illinois Department of Corrections was notified of the latest arrest.
Before the arrest in April of 2023, the male had been arrested by the Mt Vernon Police Department for Armed Robbery in one incident and Aggravated Battery in a separate incident.
His name is being withheld due to his age.
