MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon Police are investigating an early morning double shooting over the weekend.

According to Mt. Vernon Police Chief Trent Page, just before 4 a.m. Saturday, a patrol officer on South 10th Street reportedly heard gunshots and began checking the area.

Officers then found a female shot in the 1200 block of North Ninth Street, but it’s believed she had been shot on the south side and driven to the north side. She was taken to Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

While responding to the shooting, officers reported a vehicle leaving the area at a high speed that crashed at 22nd and Perkins. A male occupant of the vehicle reportedly fled on foot and has not been located. Police believe that person may have been involved in the first shooting.

While handling the woman’s shooting, MVPD received a report of another shooting victim. This shooting reportedly took place in the 1200 block of Logan, with this individual being taken to Crossroads Community Hospital before being transferred to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Chief Page says investigators have identified some individuals involved in the shootings through the use of surveillance cameras in the area. However, he says the investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made at this time.
