JEFFERSON COUNTY — A Saturday night fire in Cravat destroyed a residence and displaced more than a dozen people living in a sanctuary at the home.
According to the Irvington Fire Department, they received the alarm on the fire just before 7 p.m. Saturday. Upon their arrival, firefighters said flames were visible from the residence, with smoke coming from the eaves of the attached sanctuary.
Firefighters reportedly didn’t receive the fire call for almost 30 minutes and once on scene the size of the fire and the design of the structure made it difficult for firefighters to control the blaze.
Authorities report approximately 15 people lived in the structure, with one individual suffering a minor leg injury. Three dogs died in the blaze.
Firefighters from eight total departments remained on the scene until 1:30 Sunday morning.
The Red Cross is assisting the residents.
