JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 31-year-old Mt. Vernon man has been found mentally fit to stand trial after a bona fide doubt had earlier been raised.
Mitchell Sharp remains in the Jefferson County Jail since his arrest over the summer following a crash in Mt. Vernon that claimed the life of 18-year-old Courtney Estes, who was a pedestrian.
Sharp was reportedly naked when he fled on foot from the crash scene. The doubt surrounding his mental fitness was raised in court a few months after the crash and a fitness evaluation was ordered.
On Thursday the results of the evaluation were released in court, and the court ruled he’s fit to be tried on the charges of Class 1 felony failure to report a crash involving a death, Class 3 felony reckless homicide, and misdemeanor driving while license suspended.
The case is set for a January 16 jury trial.
