FRANKLIN COUNTY — A 36-year-old Tennessee man has been ordered held in the Franklin County, Illinois Jail following his arrest on charges including first-degree murder and carjacking over the weekend.
According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Adrian Perry was charged Monday in Franklin County Court with attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery, vehicular hijacking, attempted vehicular hijacking, and criminal damage to government-supported property.
Sheriff’s reports say around 6:15 Saturday morning, they received a call from a motorist on Rend City Road who was traveling north of State Highway 14.
The caller stated that a subject was standing in the middle of the roadway and attempted to flag her down. As she slowed, she stated that the subject attempted to enter her vehicle. As a result, she continued on and contacted 911.
The caller described the subject as being a black man wearing dark clothing. A deputy assigned the call reportedly located the subject — now identified as Perry — standing in the roadway.
The deputy made contact and began speaking with Perry who reportedly became agitated and a physical confrontation ensued. During the physical confrontation, the subject was able to enter the driver compartment of the deputy’s patrol car.
The deputy and the subject continued to struggle but Perry was able to speed away, dragging the deputy alongside the patrol car and aggressively swerving into the oncoming lane of traffic until the deputy was thrown from the vehicle.
The subject eventually crashed the squad car near the intersection of Rend City Road and the Rend Lake Dam Road where he reportedly confronted a motorist who had just parked at a recreation lot.
Perry then allegedly battered the motorist before trying unsuccessfully to take their vehicle. When that attempt failed, he reportedly fled on foot to the area of the Rend Lake Visitor Center and Maintenance Compound.
At this point, sheriff’s deputies and a host of municipal officers from throughout Franklin County responded to assist in the search.
At approximately 7:20 a.m. a deputy located Perry and he was taken into custody without further incident.
The deputy was transported by ambulance for treatment and is currently recovering from the injuries he sustained. As a result of Monday’s detention hearing, Perry will continue to be held in the Franklin County Jail pending trial.
