MOUNT VERNON — Billie Fred Hubbell, 86, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 11:40 pm September 27, 2023 at his home. He was born September 16, 1937 in Jackson, Tennessee to the late Thomas Jewel and Agnes Pauline (Milam) Hubbell. Billie married Marilyn (Morris) Hubbell on August 11, 1962 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Granite City, Illinois. They were blessed with 55 years of marriage before her passing on March 10, 2018.

Billie is survived by his sons, Dwaine Hubbell and wife, Roberta of Golden Gate, Illinois and Timothy Hubbell of Mount Vernon; daughters, Deborah Hodson of Terre Haute, Indiana and Suzanne Doggett of Mill Shoals, Illinois; grandchildren, Rebekah Hubbell and Thomas Hubbell, both of Fairfield, Illinois, Jacob Exline and wife, Joli of Fountain Inn, South Carolina, Morgan Doggett of Mill Shoals, Illinois, Nicholas Hodson of Terre Haute, Indiana, and Alissa Baldwin and husband, Jacob of Blanco, Texas; great-grandchildren, Kenley Baldwin, Holland Baldwin, Mila Exline, and Barrett Exline; and sister, Beverely Hubbell of Mobile, Alabama.

In addition to his parents and wife, Billie was preceded in death by his infant son, Garrett Hubbell.

Billie started his career as an educator working as a teacher in Collinsville, Illinois.  He was promoted to Principal for Calhoun County High School in Hardin, Illinois. He then worked as Assistant Regional Superintendent of Schools for Calhoun-Green-Jersey counties. Billie worked as Superintendent and Principal at Jasper Grade School in Fairfield, Illinois and then at Ashley Consolidated School in Ashley, Illinois in the same capacity. He worked for the State Board of Education for 41 years before retirement. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #31 and Eastern Star 203. Billie enjoyed working on model railroads, gardening, and woodworking. He also participated in many Civil War re-enactments over the years. Billie was a loving father, grandfather, and friend. He will be missed by many.

A Visitation will be held Sunday, October 1, 2023 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will begin at 5:00 pm. Interment will take place Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at Highland Memorial Gardens in Jackson, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Billie’s honor to the Hubbell family to assist with funeral and burial expenses, in care of Tim Hubbell.
