GALENA, Ill. — The Mt. Vernon Outland Airport and Salem-Leckrone Field have both been named 2023 Airport of the Year for their specific classifications.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced the honors Tuesday at the Illinois Public Airports Association Fall Conference in Galena.

According to Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman, Illinois serves as the nexus of North America’s transportation network, with aviation playing a key role in moving passengers and freight around the state, country and world. He notes aviation, from massive international airports to smaller regional facilities to a single grass landing strip, are vital to our state’s economy and mobility.

The facilities were selected because of their accomplishments, including an outstanding partnership with IDOT and a strong commitment to customer safety and satisfaction.

Mount Vernon Outland Airport was named Large General Aviation Airport of the Year, while Salem-Leckrone Field was named Small General Aviation Airport of the Year.
