MARION COUNTY — A 53-year-old Indianapolis man has waived extradition back to Illinois where he’s accused in Marion County of driving to meet a child under the age of 17 and then taking the child with him.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Jerry West’s vehicle broke down on an April afternoon on Route 37 south of Salem where a passing motorist stopped to help.
The Good Samaritan reportedly noticed a young girl in the vehicle with West and ultimately contacted the sheriff’s office when something seemed off with the child.
A search then ensued for the vehicle and after about an hour it was found around the Interstate 57 Rest Area south of Salem.
West reportedly traveled to Kentucky from Indianapolis and not only took the young girl without permission but also in violation of an order of protection that had been issued against him.
West was ultimately taken to the Marion County Jail where he was held on a no-bond warrant out of McCracken County, Kentucky.
He was released from the Marion County Jail earlier this month on a $100,000 recognizance bond after being charged with felony traveling to meet a minor and felony child abduction and was returned to Kentucky.
West was scheduled to appear Tuesday in Marion County Court but remained in the McCracken County Jail.
He’s next scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on October 3.
