MESA, Az. — Byford Harry Bruce, 79, of Mesa, Arizona, passed away at his home, on July 23, 2023, following a lengthy illness.

He was born September 17, 1943, in Dix, Illinois, the son of Harry W. Bruce and Ethel I. (Hawkins) Bruce Pittman. After graduating from Mt. Vernon Township High School with the class of 1961, Byford enlisted in the United States Air Force, and served for 8 years as a Radio Intercept Operator. Upon discharge and seeking a law enforcement career, Byford first found employment with the Lincoln, Nebraska Police Department for five years, then spent twenty-five years with the Lancaster County, Nebraska, Sheriff’s Office, attaining the rank of Captain.

Byford is survived by his wife, Elizabeth L. (Wagner) Bruce of Mesa, Arizona; son, Steven Bruce and wife Susan of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter, Christina Bruce of Lincoln, Nebraska; two sisters, Wilma I. (Bruce) Greene and husband Marion of Alton, Illinois, and Wanda S. (Bruce) Puleo of Brownstown, Illinois; and brother, Philip Bruce and wife Juanita of Dix, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Phyllis J. Bruce.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation rites for Mr. Bruce have been accorded, and no public services will be held.
